Russell 2000 small-cap index breaks 1,000

The Russell 2000, an index of small-company stocks, rose above 1,000 for the first time during Monday’s trading session.

In midday action, the index rose as high as 1,001.50 before pulling back slightly. Other major indices were little changed.

So far this year, the index has outpaced both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor’s 500.

Analysts say small-caps are doing better because they are more focused on the U.S. market, which has been recovering and holding up better than recession-plagued Europe where major corporations in both the Dow and S&P500 have been hit hard.
