Spanish unemployment hits new record of 27.16%

Spanish unemployment jumped to a fresh record high of 27.16% in the first quarter of this year, according to official figures released Thursday.

The number of jobless rose 237,400 in the period to a total of 6,202,700, a rise of 1.2 points from the fourth quarter of 2012.

The figure was more than economists expected, with Reuters calling for a rise to 26.5%.
