AT&T buying rural wireless ops from Alltel for $780M

AT&T said Tuesday it will pay $780 million in cash to Atlantic Tele-Network Inc. for the company’s U.S. retail wireless operations.

The deal includes licenses, network assets, retail stores and approximately 585,000 subscribers.

ATNI operates under the Alltel name in the U.S. Its network covers about 4.6 million people in rural areas of Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina.

The deal is expected to close in the second half of this year.
