U.S. videogame sales fall 26% in December

Sales of videogames in the U.S. dived 26% in the month of December compared to the same period last year, according to data from NPD Group released late Thursday.

Meanwhile, hardware console sales slid by 22%, despite Nintendo’s release of its new Wii U.

Analysts were expecting a decline in software sales, as competition from mobile devices, digital downloads and the aging cycle of current consoles has hurt sales of games.

The top-selling game for the month was “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2” from Activision, followed by “Just Dance 4” from Ubisoft and “Halo 4” from Microsoft.
