Apple working on lower-end iPhone

Apple Inc. is reportedly developing a lower-end iPhone to go after wider share of the mobile phone market, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday afternoon.

Citing unnamed sources, Apple is considering a iPhone made up of less expensive materials than its current lineup, including the possibility of a polycarbonate plastic body.

The new phone could launch as early as later this year, the sources said.

Apple is one of the world’s largest smartphone makers, but is believed to be at a disadvantage in lower-end emerging markets against arch-rival Samsung, which has a wider array of lower-end phones.

The company is slated to report results for its first fiscal quarter on Jan. 23, after the close of the market.
